A thoughtful Father’s Day post from one of our investors, Fred Wilson, on the importance of being present:
Around that time, I attended an offsite of a larger private equity firm and there was a organizational psychologist who gave a talk on work life balance. He said something I’ll never forget. He said that you have about ten to twelve years to connect with your kids and then they turn into teenagers, tune you out, then turn into adults and build their own lives. I thought about my kids who were five, three, and a baby and realized that time was short and I needed to be present in their lives in every way that I could. And I committed right there and then to do that. And I’ve done a pretty decent job of it. Not perfect by any means. But much better than my yoga practice.
Marriage is harder than parenthood. The Gotham Gal and I have been together for almost thirty years. I’ve heard every single one of her stories a dozen times. And she has heard mine too. Familiarity and comfort with each other is a double edged sword. We can finish each other’s sentences but that also means the sentences sometimes aren’t even uttered.
Being present in a relationship, whether it is with your kids, your spouse, or anyone important in your life is hard work, particularly for overstimulated type A personalities like me and many of the people who read this blog.

Here’s a little video documenting what transpired the first time we gave Elise homemade (homemade!!) apple sauce. Needless to say, we can’t wait to continue trying out other new flavors.

Elise turned 4 months on July 14th! Happy 4 month birthday, little girl!
Elise is no longer the sleepy little peanut she was in her earliest weeks. She now weighs over 13.5 lbs and everyday cracks us up with some new “activity”. Whether it’s with her big smiles when we come in to get her in the morning, by attempting to feed herself with a spoon, or by blowing raspberries continuously for thirty minutes, this kid has lots of tricks up her little onesie sleeves.
Many Moms tell me that they get bored playing with their kids day in and day out at this age, and I’m sure I would too if Elise were just sitting around waiting for me to entertain her, but Elise is a ball of energy and spends most her day entertaining me, so I feel pretty lucky.
What has Elise been up to over the last month you ask? Well, she’s been…

Before I had Elise I didn’t know any Moms in our neighborhood. Sort of surprising considering we live in Park Slope, perhaps one of the most kid populated neighborhoods in NYC, but I suppose our focus was more on eating out, happy hour, traveling, work and our dog (Hi, Sash!), so we didn’t really have any parent friends.
I was worried about this before having Elise. Who would we talk to when we couldn’t make it out to happy hour and bocce as often as we used to?
Luckily, I’ve been getting out a bunch in our neighborhood and meeting many new Moms and freshly hatched babies, and I have this crazy little calendar called “Music and Muffins” to thank for that. If you’re a new Mom in Park Slope, check it out. It’s filled with lots of events that new Moms and babies in the neighborhood are attending, so you’ll meet folks who are going through a similar experience and you’ll get out of your spit-up covered jammies.
[Sidenote: Ya, ya, ya, so this blog might be a little baby heavy right now (as is the author of this post!), but with Elise being our focus these days, I suppose you're going to see more baby related content on this blog

Marisa just sent me an email she got from Target featuring baby denim diapers. For serious.
How hilarious are these? I’m pretty sure they are 100% ridiculous, but is there any chance they are at all cute in person? I can’t tell from this photoshopped baby image below.
