TOAD: February 15th, 2007: For lunch I hopped a train down to the NYU area to meet Karen for some Bibimbop at the Wawa Canteen. Once you get past the owner’s obsession with keeping the drinks “just so” (in an OCD sort of way) and the somewhat snarky manner in which they take orders and call your name when your order’s ready, I thought the food was excellent, especially on a cold day like we’ve been getting in NY recently.

The meal was great – I had the beef bibimbop, Karen went with the tofu variety. Finishing up the hearty hot pot filled with meat, fresh vegetables and rice reminded me of Michael Pollan’s recent excellent article in the Times about how we as a society have become obsessed with eating “nutrients” rather than “food” and it made me really appreciate the latter.
