Not people to let a tradition die, we decided to host a second annual Oscar Potluck party again this year. Alex and I prepared by staying in on Saturday night so we could watch Babel before the big event and make better Oscar picks for the pool the following day.
On Sunday we cooked, marinated, baked and cleaned and made no fewer than three trips to our favorite bodega for last minute items before everyone arrived around 7 p.m. The guests showed off their their fancy dishes as they arrived. Check out some of these Oscar party delights–next year we may add a category for best potluck dish.
Marisa’s crudite
Matt and Freya’s sushi! Showoffs.
Daya’s ridiculous “I saw it in a magazine and thought I could make it!” cake. I actually gained three pounds from one slice of this almond, praline, chocolate ganache, butter cream, almond bark cake.
Alex preparing his dish in the snow.
Alex’s Surf and Turf
My Pork Chili Nachos
My m&m and pecan brownies (take note of the awesome Baker’s edge pan).
Beer from the boys. Doesn’t this look like a Miller lite ad?
We had a $5 buy in for the Oscar pool. Kevin, who probably saw more movies than anyone else in the room combined all year, somehow managed to come in last place. Matt, who failed to mention before hand that he had made all his picks based on the New York Time’s picks, brought home the pot. Do we think that’s being prepared or is that cheating?
The overall opinion from the group was that the Oscars were pretty boring this year, particularly the dresses and the movies. I am happy that Martin Scorcese finally won, but everyone thought it was a courtesy award for being passed over on the years Goodfellas and Raging Bull were nominated.
