I also went to John Jay High School too and remember this day all to well ! The plane flew over my house ! It sounded like pot & pans and large dishes breaking and crashing ! It was very scary it was a cold day with snow and rain mixed with foggy conditions

I hope I’m not too late ! I’m now 60 yrs old and still have family just 4 blocks from the plane crash ! Hi Sharon. My Name is James McDermott. Although I now live in south Jersey, I was just reading in todays sunday Daily News about the 50th anniversary of that plane crash. I never needed to read it was the anniversary. There are three days in my life, I’ll always remember where I was when disaster struck. The day President Kennedy was shot. The day the twin towers were struck and the park slope plane crash.
For Kennedys news I was a sophmore in Erasmus Hall, a math class. Mrs.Hyman was my teacher. The announcement came over the P.A.
As for the park slope disaster I was a little closer. I was a sixth grader in St.Augustine’s
a half a block down at sterling place and sixth. Yes it was a cold day and the snow from the previous day, stayed frozen on the ground. I sat in the third floor (top floor)class room. second row from the large long windows, fifth seat back. Our Nun was sister Francis Winifred (sister winnie we called her). As she was teaching a Sound of a jet air craft was getting closer and closer, Till it was almost over us I felt like ducking under my desk. Just as it thunderd over us the mighty roar turned into a whistling sound( the pilot must have shut down his engine). The school shook and the crashing sound was thunderous, Sister Winnie started us saying prayers instantly.
We were dismissed earlier than ususal through the high school entrance on park place. My mother who was in our apartment on Bergen Street about five blocks from the school, said she thought the fire escape in the rear of the building fell into the yard. Then she heard on the radio a plane crashed on sterling place and sixth ave, right where the school sat. She raced to the school and was thankful that the radio was wrong. That evening myself and a couple of friends tryed to get as close to the crash scene as possible only to see white sticks placed upright where body parts were found.
Yes, I remember it.

I had two girls in my class, the Marshall sisters,Maureen and Kathleen. They were absent that day. They lived in the top floor of the building where the planes wing went through. Their Picture was in the news paper the next day, they were safe and in their P.J’s. Another of my class mates was also a friend of mine Joseph Esposito(Joey). He is now the chief of police in New York City. I think he was sitting in the first or second row.
I’ll save the twin tower story for another time, as my hands are still shaking from writing about this.

I was in 4th grade at St. Francis Xavier Elementary School on President St. It was a truly dismal winter day, when out of the sky one could hear the crescendo of the engines' roar until they became deafening. My teacher, Mrs. Dunne, fainted as the fireball passed our window. One didn't even have time to say, “What is that?” before the plane crashed into the street. Only about 9 at the time, I thought the tall flames were coming from the roof tops of the nearby buildings. Just horrifying. Not even 9/11 was as terrifying for me, as this was a plane falling from the sky right into the midst of our city streets.
